James Toback wrote and directed the film, which follows his earlier projects Love & Money, Black and White, and Harvard Man. Toback also served as a producer alongside Damon Bingham. What's left behind the scenes
- To gauge the film's effect on the audience, James Toback turned to a demographic with little to no interest in boxing – elderly white women. He asked them to watch the entire film. Anyone who decided to leave within 5 minutes of the start would receive $100. If they stayed past 5 minutes, they would watch the film to the end and give their honest opinion. The director later recounted that no one left within the first 5 minutes, and many were in tears by the end.
- The film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival. The audience gave it a 10-minute standing ovation at the end of the screening.
