Oceans

Oceans is a documentary that takes viewers beneath the surface of the world's seas, from tropical lagoons and polar ice to the deep zones untouched by sunlight. Filmed at dozens of locations around the globe, it follows dolphins, whales, tuna, crabs and shoals of fish through their daily lives, showing both the beauty of marine ecosystems and the pressure human activity places on them. Jacques Perrin directs and also appears as one of the narrators, alongside Pierce Brosnan, with Lancelot Perrin also credited.

The film belongs to a series of nature documentaries Perrin made after Winged Migration, and he wrote the screenplay with Jacques Cluzaud and Stéphane Durand. It was produced by Nicolas Mauvernay, Perrin and Manuel Monzón, and financed on a scale rare for the genre, with a budget reported at around 80 million dollars. That outlay was nearly matched by its worldwide gross of roughly 83 million dollars, a return that illustrates how costly large-scale underwater filming is and how difficult such productions are to recoup theatrically.

Audience response has been favorable: on IMDb it holds 7.7 out of 10 from about 10,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5 out of 10 from 346 votes. The critics' rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 79 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting broadly similar assessments from reviewers and viewers.
