The World of Apu follows Apu, a former student living in Calcutta without work and with only a vague ambition to become a writer. An old college friend, Pulu, persuades him to travel to a village wedding in rural Bengal. When the groom turns out to be seriously unwell and the ceremony is called off, Apu steps in to marry the bride, Aparna, rather than see her disgraced. He takes her back to the city, and the two begin building a life together before loss and grief reshape his path. The film completes the story begun in Pather Panchali and continued in Aparajito.
Satyajit Ray directed, wrote and produced the film, the third he made and the closing chapter of the trilogy centred on Apu, arriving after Pather Panchali and Aparajito. Soumitra Chatterjee plays Apu and Sharmila Tagore plays Aparna, with Alok Chakravarty as the couple's son Kajal, Swapan Mukherjee as Pulu, and Sefalika Devi and Dhiresh Majumdar in supporting roles.
Released in 1959 and running 105 minutes, the film holds an 8.1 rating on TMDB from roughly 290 votes and a critics' rating of 9.1 from 29 reviews, suggesting it was received more warmly by critics than by the general audience on TMDB.
