A Lot Like Love
Short description
A Lot Like Love follows Oliver and Emily, two people who meet on a flight from Los Angeles to New York and quickly decide that they are too different to build anything lasting together. Over the next several years, chance keeps bringing them back into each other's lives, and their relationship shifts from wary acquaintance to friendship, with each of them pursuing other partners and other plans along the way. Their views on life remain at odds: Oliver is organized and set on a clear path to professional success, while Emily is impulsive and drawn to risk. The film traces the recurring encounters that gradually change what they mean to each other.
Nigel Cole directed the film, the third feature in a run that began with Saving Grace in 2000 and Calendar Girls in 2003 and continued with Made in Dagenham in 2010. Colin Patrick Lynch wrote the screenplay, and Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet lead the cast as Oliver and Emily, with Kathryn Hahn, Kal Penn, Ali Larter and Taryn Manning among the supporting players. Touchstone Pictures and Beacon Pictures were among the production companies behind the roughly 30 million dollar budget.
Released in April 2005, the film earned about 43 million dollars worldwide, a modest return against its cost. On IMDb it holds a 6.6 rating from around 73,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.8 from a much smaller base of 1,399. A critics' rating of 5.2 from 122 reviews sits below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, the plot did not include an episode where Emily and Oliver stand naked behind a car and Oliver tells Emily that she just "glanced" (at his genitals). The glance was made and the phrase uttered completely by chance, and the director decided to insert this episode into the film.
- During the filming of "More Than Love" (2005), actress Berdie M. Hale was over 90 years old. In the film, she played an episodic role in the New York subway with a single line ("Would you like to sit with your girlfriend?"). In the 1988 romantic comedy "Coming to America", Hale played exactly the same role, also in the subway, when she offered the main characters to sit together.
- Oliver, played by Ashton Kutcher, tells his sister Ellen, portrayed by actress and singer Taryn Manning, over the phone that he has just met his idol, the rapper Eminem. In the film "8 Mile" (2002), Manning played Eminem's ex-girlfriend.
