Short description

On New Year's Eve in Detroit, a snowstorm forces a prison transport bus to take shelter at Precinct 13, a police station that is only hours away from closing for good. Among the prisoners is Marion Bishop, a notorious mob figure. A small skeleton crew led by Sergeant Jake Roenick is left to guard the building, but the station soon comes under sustained attack from armed men outside whose target is Bishop. The officers and their prisoners have no choice but to work together to survive until morning.

The film is directed by Jean-François Richet and written by James DeMonaco. It is the first title in Richet's directing filmography, ahead of the two Mesrine films, One Wild Moment, Blood Father, The Emperor of Paris, Plane and the later features Mutiny and The Hunchback, Soul of Paris. Ethan Hawke plays Roenick, with Laurence Fishburne as Bishop, Gabriel Byrne, Maria Bello, Drea de Matteo and John Leguizamo in supporting roles.

Made for around 30 million US dollars, the film took in roughly 35 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from about 84,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 from 1,247 votes. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 162 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a broadly similar level of response from both groups.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Before Ethan Hawke, the lead role in the project was offered to Mark Wahlberg, but the actor declined.
  • After filming "Training Day," Ethan Hawke deliberately sought another screenplay reminiscent of 1970s police thrillers.
