Short description
Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts is a documentary in which Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson reunite with other members of the cast and crew of the Harry Potter films. The occasion is the anniversary of the release of the first entry in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and the participants return to the places where the saga began. Through interviews and conversations, they look back at the making of the eight films and at what the experience meant to those involved, with Chris Columbus and other cast members from across the series taking part.
The film is directed by Eran Creevy, Giorgio Testi, Joe Pearlman and Casey Patterson, and produced by Dan Sacks, Mike Darnell and Brooke Karzen for Pulse Films, Warner Horizon Unscripted Television and Casey Patterson Entertainment. For Creevy it followed the features Welcome to the Punch and Collide; for Testi and Pearlman it stands at the start of their directing careers. Around twenty-five cast members are credited, among them Bonnie Wright, Matthew Lewis and Tom Felton.
Released on 1 January 2022, the documentary runs 103 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 8 out of 10 from roughly 50,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.3 out of 10 from a much smaller audience sample of about 3,600. A film critics' rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 27 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley, was filmed separately in Toronto, Canada – the actor was unable to arrive for filming in London.
- J.K. Rowling, the author of the books without which there would be no “Potterverse” and, consequently, this film, appears on screen very little. She is shown in archival footage (less than 30 seconds), and her name was also mentioned in interviews by some actors, while the film's promotional materials and trailers say nothing about her. Some claimed this was the result of her views on transgender people, which caused the “Potterverse” actors to criticize her repeatedly. However, according to Entertainment Weekly, she was invited to the film but declined, stating that archival footage was enough. At the same time, sources denied any connection between her decision not to film and the scandals caused by the writer's remarks about transgender people.
- In the first version of the film, Emma Roberts was mistakenly shown as young Emma Watson, and Oliver and James Phelps were mixed up. These errors were corrected in a new version by January 3rd.
- A significant portion of the film was shot on the sets of the Harry Potter films, which are now part of the Harry Potter Studio Tour theme park in Leavesden, UK, which opened in 2012.
