The Sure Thing
Short description
College freshmen Gib and Alison are heading in the same direction for the winter break, and end up sharing a long drive across the country. He is going to California, where a friend has promised him a girl in a bikini who is a sure thing. She is on her way to see her boyfriend, a young man she takes rather seriously. Neither is pleased about the company, and the road brings out plenty of friction between two people who seem to have little in common: he is a shameless slacker, she is studious and guarded. Their arguing gradually gives way to a warmer understanding, and both are left to decide what they actually want before the trip ends.
Rob Reiner directed the film, his second, following This Is Spinal Tap and preceding Stand by Me. Jonathan Roberts wrote the screenplay with Steve Bloom, and Roger Birnbaum produced. John Cusack plays Gib, with Daphne Zuniga as Alison; Anthony Edwards, Boyd Gaines, Tim Robbins and Lisa Jane Persky round out the cast. Made for about 5 million dollars, it took roughly 18 million worldwide.
On IMDb it holds a 6.9 rating from 36 critics' reviews, while TMDB users give it 6.5 from 339 votes, so the two measures sit fairly close together.

- Anthony Edwards initially auditioned for the role of Walter "Gib" Gibson, and was later cast as Lance.
