Treasure Planet
Short description
Treasure Planet is an animated science-fiction adventure based on Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, relocated to outer space. Jim Hawkins, a restless teenager, comes into possession of a map showing the way to a legendary planet where the pirate Flint is said to have hidden an enormous fortune. He joins the crew of the solar galleon Legacy, where he befriends the ship's cook, John Silver, a cyborg who teaches him the skills of space travel while the vessel faces black holes, supernovas and cosmic storms. Silver, however, has his own plans for the treasure, and Jim must draw on everything he has learned to survive.
The film was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, who also wrote the screenplay with Rob Edwards and produced it with Roy Conli. It followed The Great Mouse Detective, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Hercules in the pair's filmography, and preceded The Princess and the Frog and Moana. Joseph Gordon-Levitt voices Jim, with Brian Murray as Silver, Emma Thompson as Captain Amelia, David Hyde Pierce as Doctor Doppler and Martin Short as B.E.N.
Released in 2002, the film had a budget of 140 million USD and took about 110 million USD worldwide, so it did not recover its costs at the box office. Audiences rate it well: 7.2/10 on IMDb from 147,000 votes and 7.6/10 on TMDB from 4,733 votes. The critics' rating stands at 6.7/10 from 149 reviews.
