The Old Man and the Sea
Short description
An aging Cuban fisherman named Santiago has struggled with a long streak of bad luck, returning from the ocean without any fish for weeks. To reclaim his self-respect and prove his capabilities, he sails far into the Gulf Stream, leaving behind a young boy who remains his loyal friend. After a long period of failure, Santiago hooks a massive fish, leading to a grueling multi-day battle of endurance and will between the man and the creature.
Directed and written by Aleksandr Petrov, this animated short film was the first in a sequence of his works that includes My Love. The production utilized a paint-on-glass animation technique and is a co-production between Russia, Canada, and Japan. The voice cast features Gordon Pinsent as the old man and Kevin Duhaney as the boy, with additional voices provided by Youji Matsuda and Rentaro Mikuni.
The film received significant recognition, winning an Academy Award in 2000 for Best Animated Short Film. It has been well received by viewers, maintaining an 8/10 rating on IMDb from 4,900 votes and a 7.6/10 rating on TMDB from 173 votes.
