Short description
Grease 2 is set at Rydell High School in 1961, two years after the class seen in the earlier film moved on. A new group of seniors now fills the school, among them the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds, the cliques that set the tone on campus. Stephanie Zinone leads the Pink Ladies, while Johnny heads the T-Birds. Michael Carrington arrives as a new student and is quickly labelled a brainiac, which leaves him outside the circles that matter. He sets out to change that by repairing an old motorcycle and adopting the leather-jacketed look of the T-Birds, hoping to win Stephanie's attention and avoid trouble with Johnny.
The film is a musical romantic comedy directed by Patricia Birch, from a screenplay by Ken Finkleman, with Allan Carr and Robert Stigwood producing. Birch had worked as a choreographer on the earlier Grease, and this was her only feature as director. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Stephanie and Maxwell Caulfield plays Michael, heading a credited cast of sixty-one that also includes Lorna Luft, Maureen Teefy, Alison Price and Pamela Adlon. Released in June 1982, it was made for about 13 million dollars and returned roughly 15 million worldwide.
Audience ratings sit at 4.5 out of 10 on IMDb from nearly 38,000 votes and 5.3 out of 10 on TMDB from around 759 votes. A critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 43 reviews is close to the IMDb figure.
What's left behind the scenes
- In an interview in 2003, Didi Conn explained what happened to her character Frenchy. According to the actress, filming began while the script was not yet finished, but Frenchy was present in the script that the actors were working with. The character was removed from the script later, but all the already filmed scenes with Frenchy were decided to be left in the final cut. Conn described the filming process as "raw, frantic, and poorly organized."
- The song “Do It For Our Country” was performed by a duo, but Maureen Teefy was unable to come to the recording, so only Peter Frechette performed it, which is why Teefy's voice is not heard on the film's soundtrack – her voice was simply dubbed onto Frechette's recording later.
- According to Gary Davis, who served as a stunt double for Maxwell Caulfield, Michelle Pfeiffer performed all her own stunts.
- Michelle Pfeiffer and Maxwell Caulfield did not get along during filming.
- Tom Cruise auditioned for the role of Johnny, but director Patricia Birch decided that the role required an older and taller actor.
- Originally, it was planned as the second part of a four-film franchise and a series, but the film was not successful at the box office, and all those plans were abandoned. Disney used the script for the third film in the franchise and reworked it into the screenplay for the film 'High School Musical' (Kenny Ortega, 2006).
- Around the middle of filming, Pamela Adlon was involved in a car accident. Fortunately, most of her scenes had already been shot, so doubles were used in only a few episodes.
- The lead role was initially intended for Andy Gibb (1958-1988) of The Bee Gees, but he did not pass the audition. Cher initially vied for the role of Paulette, but left the project due to a low salary and an unfinished script. Jennifer Beals was initially cast as Sharon, but she left the project for a role with Adrian Lyne in the melodrama 'Flashdance' (1983).
