Gone Fishin'
Short description
Joe Waters and Gus Green are lifelong friends who have fished together since childhood. Their dream is to land a trophy catch, and a prize vacation in Florida seems like the perfect chance to finally do it. Before they get far, their car is stolen and they are left pushing their boat along the asphalt. Two women chasing the thief who took one of their jewels give the pair a ride, and the trip turns into a search for hidden valuables, with the two hapless fishermen trying their luck with the women while trouble follows them.
The comedy was directed by Christopher Cain, the sixth of the six features listed for him, following The Next Karate Kid. Joe Pesci and Danny Glover play the leads, with Rosanna Arquette, Lynn Whitfield and Willie Nelson among the credited cast of 44. Jill Mazursky and J.J. Abrams wrote the screenplay, and Roger Birnbaum and Julie Bergman Sender produced.
Released in May 1997, the film runs 94 minutes. On a budget of about 53 million dollars, it took in roughly 20 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 2.5 out of 10 from 27 reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 4.9 out of 10 from 169 votes, so audiences received it only somewhat less harshly than reviewers did.
What's left behind the scenes
- During filming, an accident occurred in which stuntwoman Janet Wilder died, and her husband and father-in-law stuntmen Scott and Glenn R. Wilder (1933-2017) were injured.
- Filming took place from November 6, 1995, to February 1, 1996.
- Initially, John G. Avildsen was chosen as the film's director, but he was fired after two weeks, paid his due $2 million, and replaced by Christopher Cain. In "The Karate Kid Part IV" (1994), Cain again replaced Avildsen in the director's chair.
