Doctor Zhivago is a drama set in Russia during the First World War and the revolution that followed, spanning roughly the first three decades of the twentieth century. Yuri Zhivago is a physician and poet married to Tonya, the daughter of the family that raised him, but his love belongs to Lara, a woman he meets against the backdrop of the war. The upheaval of the revolution and the civil war that comes after it repeatedly separates them and disrupts the lives of everyone around them, including Lara's husband, Pasha. The film is an adaptation of Boris Pasternak's novel, which was banned in the Soviet Union, and Maurice Jarre composed its score.
David Lean directed the film, working from a screenplay by Robert Bolt and producing with Carlo Ponti. It came after Lawrence of Arabia and The Bridge on the River Kwai among the ten features Lean directed, and it was followed by A Passage to India. Omar Sharif plays Yuri and Julie Christie plays Lara, with Geraldine Chaplin as Tonya, Rod Steiger as Komarovsky, Alec Guinness as Yevgraf and Tom Courtenay as Pasha. The production cost about 11 million dollars and took roughly 112 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget.
On IMDb the film holds 7.9 out of 10 from around 87,000 votes, and on TMDB it has 7.6 from 1,315 votes. A critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 49 reviews places it level with the IMDb figure and slightly above the TMDB one: audiences and critics agree closely on the film. It runs 200 minutes.
