Downfall: The Case Against Boeing examines the two Boeing 737 MAX crashes that occurred within months of each other and the investigations that followed. The documentary speaks with journalists, aviation experts and former officials who trace how a corporate culture that placed financial performance ahead of engineering caution may have allowed the aircraft to enter service with a flawed flight-control system. It follows the questions raised by the families of those killed and the scrutiny directed at the company's relationship with its regulator, and it places the accidents in the wider context of how Boeing's business decisions affected the safety of its planes.
Rory Kennedy directed the film, working from a screenplay by Keven McAlester and Mark Bailey; the producers include Brian Grazer, Sara Bernstein and Justin Wilkes. Among those appearing are journalists Andy Pasztor and Jon Ostrower, pilot and aviation expert Chesley Sullenberger, and, through archive footage, Hoda Kotb, Richard Engel and Mark Rosenker. The film runs 89 minutes and was released in February 2022. It sits among several documentaries Kennedy has directed, including The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari, made the same year.
Viewers have responded favourably. On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 7.4 from roughly 15,000 votes, while on TMDB it has a rating of 7.1 from about 217 votes.
