The Quiet Girl

Set in rural Ireland in 1981, The Quiet Girl follows Cáit, a reserved nine-year-old growing up in a poor and overcrowded household where she is largely overlooked. With her mother expecting another child, Cáit is sent to spend the summer with distant relatives she has never met, the Kinsellas, a hardworking farming couple. She arrives with only the clothes she is wearing and no idea when she will return home. Under Eibhlín's patient care she gradually comes out of her shell, while the quieter Seán keeps his distance at first. In a house that seems to hold no secrets, she eventually learns a painful truth.

The film is Colm Bairéad's feature debut, which he also wrote, produced by Cleona Ní Chrualaoi. It is an Irish-language drama with a cast led by Catherine Clinch as Cáit, alongside Carrie Crowley, Andrew Bennett, Michael Patric, Kate Nic Chonaonaigh and Joan Sheehy, with 33 credited performers in all. It runs 95 minutes.

The Quiet Girl drew strong notices, holding a critics' rating of 8.7/10 from 149 reviews, well above its audience scores of 7.7/10 on IMDb and 7.5/10 on TMDB.
