Mother India

Mother India centres on Radha, a village woman in rural India who endures hardship after her husband leaves the family behind. Left to raise her sons alone and weighed down by a debt owed to the local moneylender Sukhilala, she holds to her own moral code through every setback. Her sons grow up with sharply different temperaments, one diligent and steady, the other headstrong and drawn toward trouble, and the tension between them shapes Radha's struggle to keep the family together.

The film was directed and produced by Mehboob Khan for Mehboob Productions, following earlier work such as Bharat Mata. Nargis plays Radha, with Sunil Dutt as Birju, Rajendra Kumar as Ramu, Raaj Kumar as Shamu, Kanhaiyalal Chaturvedi as Sukhilala and Kumkum as Champa Chanchal. At 175 minutes, it is a large-scale rural melodrama built around its central performance.

Reception was strong on both counts. On TMDB it holds 7 out of 10 from 109 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 6.9 out of 10 from 14 reviews, so critical and audience responses sit close together. Released in February 1957, the film remains a widely recognised work of Hindi cinema.
