Navalny is a documentary about the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who survived an August 2020 poisoning with a banned nerve agent. After emergency treatment in Siberia, he was taken to Germany, where he spent months recovering in the Black Forest while trying to piece together what had happened to him. Working with the investigative journalist Christo Grozev, he took part in an operation to identify those suspected of orchestrating the attack, and he then chose to fly back to Russia, knowing he would be arrested on arrival.
Daniel Roher directs, and the film is the first feature in the chronological list of his directing credits, ahead of Blink, Tuner and The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist. The production was handled by HBO Max, CNN Films, Fishbowl Films and RaeFilm Studios, with Odessa Rae, Shane Boris and Melanie Miller producing. Alexei Navalny appears as himself, alongside his wife Yulia, his daughter Daria and his son Zakhar, Maria Pevchikh and Grozev.
The film was released in April 2022 and runs 98 minutes. On IMDb it holds 7.8 out of 10 from around 48,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.3 out of 10 from roughly 300 votes. A critics' rating of 8.2 out of 10 from 103 reviews places it above both audience scores.
