And Now for Something Completely Different is a 1971 British comedy film built from sketches originally performed by the Monty Python troupe on their BBC television series. Directed by Ian MacNaughton, who also worked on the show, it gathers material from the first two seasons of Monty Python's Flying Circus into a single cinematic collection. The film is not a continuous narrative; instead, it strings together some of the group's better-known routines, including the dead parrot sketch, the lumberjack song, the upper-class twit of the year competition and the world's deadliest joke.
The screenplay is credited to Terry Gilliam, Michael Palin and Terry Jones, while the full troupe appears on screen: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Gilliam. It was produced by Patricia Casey for Python (Monty) Pictures, Playboy Enterprises and Kettledrum Films, and runs 88 minutes. Released on 28 September 1971, it arrived early in the troupe's film career, before their later feature-length narrative comedies.
Reception has been solid rather than exceptional. On IMDb it holds 7.5/10 from around 33,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2/10 from roughly 600 votes. A critics' rating of 7.5/10 from 25 reviews sits close to the audience scores on both platforms.
What's left behind the scenes
- Once, Terry Gilliam asked the legendary animator Bob Godfrey (1921-2013) if he could help with the animated inserts for the film, and Godfrey, who didn't know who Gilliam was, told him to get lost. Only later did Godfrey learn that Gilliam was a member of the comedy group 'Monty Python,' and he fulfilled his request.
