Smilla's Sense of Snow

Smilla Jasperson, a scientist from Greenland living in Copenhagen, is unconvinced when a young neighbour boy is found dead in the snow below her apartment building. The police treat the fall as an accident, so she begins looking into the circumstances herself. Her inquiries lead her toward a corporation with interests in Greenland, and the more she presses, the more she draws the attention of people who want the matter closed.

Bille August directed the film, the third in a career that by then included The House of the Spirits and would continue with Les Misérables. Ann Biderman wrote the screenplay, and the producers were Bernd Eichinger, Rosanne Korenberg and Martin Moszkowicz. Julia Ormond plays Smilla, with Gabriel Byrne, Richard Harris, Jim Broadbent, Tom Wilkinson and Robert Loggia among the credited cast of twenty. The production was a German, Danish and Swedish collaboration with a budget of 35 million dollars, but it returned only about 2 million dollars worldwide.

On IMDb the film holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 16,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from more than 270 votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 32 reviews places it close to the audience scores on both platforms, suggesting a divided response rather than a clear consensus in either direction.
