Ash
Short description
Ash is a science fiction horror film set on a remote planet called Ash. Riya, a scientist stationed there as part of an expedition, wakes up to find the facility wrecked and her colleagues either dead or missing, with no clear memory of the attack. When a man named Brion arrives from an orbital station to bring her back, she insists on staying to find out what happened. Their investigation turns into a test of physical and psychological endurance as the two are forced to work out whether they can rely on each other.
The film was directed by Flying Lotus, following Kuso (2017) and his segment in V/H/S/99 (2022), and it was written by Jonni Remmler. Eiza González plays Riya, Aaron Paul plays Brion, and Iko Uwais, Kate Elliott, Beulah Koale and Flying Lotus round out the cast. It is a co-production between New Zealand, the United States and Finland, with a runtime of 95 minutes.
On TMDB, the film holds a rating of 5.1 out of 10 from 484 votes, placing it below the middle of the scale for its audience. Flying Lotus went on to direct V/H/S/Mixtape in 2026.
What's left behind the scenes
- When filming the final showdown, the filmmakers drew inspiration from a similar scene in Paul W. S. Anderson's horror film Resident Evil (2002).
- In 2022, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tessa Thompson were cast in the film. A year later, it was announced that Aaron Paul and Eiza González would appear on screen instead of Gordon-Levitt and Thompson, respectively.
