Nineteen Eighty-Four

Nineteen Eighty-Four is set in Oceania, a totalitarian state where the ruling Party monitors its citizens constantly and rewrites the past to match whatever it currently claims. Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth, altering old news reports and documents so they support the official version of events. His affair with Julia becomes the one part of his life the state has not organized for him, and in a society where personal loyalty is treated as a crime, the two try to keep their relationship hidden from the cameras and microphones watching everyone. Richard Burton plays O'Brien, and Suzanna Hamilton plays Julia.

Michael Radford wrote and directed the film, which was released in November 1984 and runs 113 minutes. It was his first feature as director, followed chronologically by White Mischief, The Postman, The Merchant of Venice, Flawless and Elsa & Fred. John Hurt leads the cast as Winston, with Cyril Cusack, Gregor Fisher and James Walker in supporting roles. The production, made in the United Kingdom and the United States, cost about 7 million dollars and returned roughly 8 million worldwide.

On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from 88,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.8 out of 10 from 1,713 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 32 reviews places it close to the audience scores. The film adapts George Orwell's novel of the same name.
