Short description

Nikita is a young woman who takes part in a botched pharmacy robbery while high, and a policeman is shot dead. Sentenced to life in prison, she is instead declared dead and pressed into service by a shadowy government branch, which offers her a choice between training as a covert assassin and a lethal injection. She submits to years of hard instruction under the watchful Bob and emerges as a skilled operative living under a false identity as a nurse. When she falls for Marco, a man she meets in ordinary life, she begins to want out, but her handlers will not release her. Directed and written by Luc Besson, this was his third feature, following The Big Blue and preceding Atlantis.

Anne Parillaud plays the title role, with Tchéky Karyo as Bob, Jean-Hugues Anglade as Marco, and Jean Reno as the cleaner Victor. Jeanne Moreau appears as Armande. The film was produced by Patrice Ledoux for Gaumont with Italian partners, on a budget of about 6 million dollars, and returned roughly 5 million at the worldwide box office.

Audiences have rated it 7.2 out of 10 on IMDb across 81,000 votes and 7.1 out of 10 on TMDB from 2,220 votes. A critics' rating of 7.3 out of 10 from 47 reviews places it in line with those viewer scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In the restaurant scene, Nikita fires a Desert Eagle Mark VII pistol chambered in .357 Magnum, manufactured by the Israeli military state corporation Israel Military Industries.
  • Filming took place from February 13 to July 10, 1989.
  • At the insistence of Luc Besson, the lead actress, Anne Parillaud, spent a lot of time with weapons to get used to them. She constantly loaded and unloaded a pistol mock-up even in the car. Once, police noticed this, assumed the weapon was real, and forced the actress to stop and exit the car with her hands up.
  • In the first scene featuring Anne Parillaud, she delivers only one line, yet it took around a hundred takes to film. Parillaud later learned that director Luc Besson used the second take in the film.
  • Viktor arrives at the embassy in a Mercedes with diplomatic license plates indicating the car belongs to the Australian embassy.
