Honey, I Shrunk the Kids

Wayne Szalinski is a scientist who invents a machine capable of shrinking objects. When his latest experiment finally works, his own children and the two sons of his neighbor are caught in its beam and reduced to a fraction of their normal size. Stranded in the backyard, the four kids must cross a lawn that now seems like a vast wilderness, where blades of grass tower over them and ordinary insects pose a serious threat. Meanwhile, Wayne has no idea what has happened to them and searches for the missing children.

The film is a Walt Disney Pictures production directed by Joe Johnston, working from a screenplay by Tom Schulman and Ed Naha. It was Johnston's first feature as director, ahead of The Rocketeer and Jumanji. Rick Moranis plays Wayne, with Matt Frewer, Marcia Strassman and Kristine Sutherland as the parents, and Thomas Wilson Brown and Jared Rushton among the young cast.

Released in June 1989, the film runs 93 minutes and blends adventure, comedy, family and science fiction. Made for about 18 million dollars, it earned roughly 223 million worldwide, a strong return that reflects its broad appeal. On IMDb it holds a 6.4 rating from around 176,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.3 from over 3,400 votes. A critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 38 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
