Matria

Matria is a Spanish drama set in a fishing village in Galicia, where Ramona, a woman in her forties, works at a fish-processing plant and holds her household together. When the factory changes hands and wages are cut, her attempt to resist costs her the job. With her eighteen-year-old daughter Estrella preparing to stand on her own, Ramona takes on a string of poorly paid jobs to keep the girl's future secure. A chance encounter with a man named Xosé grows into an unusual friendship that leads her to reconsider what her own life might still hold beyond relentless work and sacrifice.

Álvaro Gago directed and wrote the film, expanding a story he had told earlier in his short film of the same name. María Vázquez plays Ramona, with Santi Prego, Susana Sampedro, Soraya Luaces and E.R. Cunha "Tatán" among the supporting cast. The film runs 100 minutes and was produced in Spain by Avalon alongside Matriuska Producciones, Elastica Films and Ringo Media.

Released in March 2023, the film holds a rating of 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb from roughly 800 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.2 from a much smaller number of votes.
