Short description
Ferris Bueller's Day Off follows a charismatic high school student who decides to skip school shortly before graduation. He feigns illness to fool his parents, then talks his girlfriend and his anxious best friend into spending the day in Chicago. As the three travel through the city, the school principal grows suspicious and tries to catch Ferris in the act, while Ferris's sister also works to expose his scheme. The friends borrow a prized sports car belonging to the best friend's father, adding further risk to the outing.
John Hughes directed the film and wrote the screenplay, with Hughes and Tom Jacobson producing. It followed Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science among the director's features, and arrived between those earlier teen films and later comedies such as Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck. Matthew Broderick plays Ferris, with Alan Ruck as Cameron, Mia Sara as Sloane, Jeffrey Jones as Principal Rooney and Jennifer Grey as Jeanie.
Made for about 6 million dollars, the film returned roughly 70 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.8 out of 10 from more than 379,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.6 from over 5,500 votes. A critics' rating of 7.8 from 78 reviews places it close to the audience scores.

- Lyman Ward and Cindy Pickett, who played the main character's parents in the film, actually got married after filming.
- The screenplay was written in just 6 days.
- During the parade in the film, several people (including a construction worker and a window washer) who had nothing to do with the film are dancing. They were just dancing to the music that was playing, but director John Hughes liked it so much that he told the cameraman to film them.
- For several years, the idea of filming a sequel (like Ferris going to college or getting a job) lingered, but it was eventually abandoned.
- To prepare for filming the scene with the drug addict in the police station, Charlie Sheen deliberately did not sleep for more than two days.
- Cameron's father's 'Ferrari' was not real. Renting a 'Ferrari' would have been quite expensive, so three fiberglass replicas of the car were made.
