Je Tu Il Elle follows a young woman named Julie in the aftermath of a breakup. Isolated in her room, she rearranges and then removes her furniture, eats sugar, repaints the walls and writes a letter. Eventually she leaves the apartment, hitchhikes with a truck driver, and continues on to a woman she loves. The film is quiet and spare, built around the routines and small actions of a solitary figure navigating heartbreak.
The film was released in 1974 and runs 86 minutes. It is a Belgian and French production from Paradise Films and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Chantal Akerman directed, produced and stars as Julie, with a screenplay she wrote alongside Paul Paquay and Eric de Kuyper. Niels Arestrup appears as the truck driver and Claire Wauthion as the girlfriend. It stands as the first of Akerman's three listed directorial credits here, made before Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles and Portrait of a Young Girl at the End of the '60s in Brussels.
Audience reception places the film in modest but steady territory: on IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 3,800 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from roughly 124 votes. Those figures suggest a small, committed viewership rather than a wide one, consistent with a restrained independent drama that has circulated mainly among audiences interested in Akerman's early work.
