Wren is determined to make a name for herself and escape the dullness of New Jersey for New York City. She is drawn to the punk scene as a way to get noticed, even though the movement's moment has largely passed by the time she arrives. What she lacks in genuine connections she makes up for in nerve, drifting between people who can help her get closer to the spotlight.

Her best ally is Paul, a young man who has recently come to the city from Montana and who repeatedly allows himself to be used. Wren, meanwhile, pours her energy into Eric, a musician who once had a brief taste of renown and now pins his remaining hopes on a new band project on the West Coast. She fails to see that she is being taken advantage of even as she takes advantage of Paul.
