Favoriten is a documentary centered on a diverse group of elementary students in the Favoriten district of Vienna. The film follows a class from ages seven to ten, specifically during their third grade year, which serves as a pivotal period for their future schooling. Their teacher, Ilkay, strives to build a secure and inclusive classroom for children who often face discrimination, struggle with the language, or come from families impacted by war. Despite a lack of systemic resources, the story focuses on the daily challenges and successes of this small community.
Directed by Ruth Beckermann, this project is the first in a chronological sequence that includes her later film, WAX & GOLD. Beckermann also served as a producer and co-wrote the screenplay with Elisabeth Menasse. The production was supported by several Austrian organizations, including Filmfonds Wien, ORF, OFI, and Filmstandort Austria. The documentary features İlkay İdiskut appearing as herself. The film has a total runtime of 118 minutes.
