Short description

Alien: Romulus is set in the Alien universe and follows a group of young space colonizers who board a derelict space station. Searching its depths, they encounter a lethal life form and find themselves fighting to stay alive.

The film is directed by Fede Álvarez from a screenplay he wrote with Rodo Sayagues. It is his fourth feature, following Evil Dead, Don't Breathe and The Girl in the Spider's Web, and it was produced by Ridley Scott, Michael A. Pruss and Walter Hill, among others. Cailee Spaeny stars as Rain, with David Jonsson as Andy, Archie Renaux as Tyler, Isabela Merced as Kay, Spike Fearn as Bjorn and Aileen Wu as Navarro. The film runs 119 minutes and was released in August 2024.

Made for a budget of 80 million USD, it earned 351 million USD worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost. On TMDB it holds a 7.2/10 rating from 4,902 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The design of the monster shown at the end of the film was borrowed from a letter written by screenwriter Dan O'Bannon to artist H.R. Giger during the production of the first film in the franchise.
  • The film contains numerous references to the video game Alien: Isolation, including the emergency phone, which serves as a save point in the game.
  • To ensure the actors' reactions were believable, director Fede Álvarez placed speakers throughout the set and periodically (when least expected) played recordings of Xenomorph sounds and alarm signals.
  • The idea for an Alien film featuring young characters came from a scene in the movie 'Aliens' (found in the special edition). It shows children playing and running through the corridors of the residential quarters of the colonists' complex. Álvarez wondered what it would be like to grow up in a colony on a planet whose terraforming would not be completed for another half-century.
  • The events of the film take place between the events of the movies 'Alien' and 'Aliens'.
  • The likeness of Ian Holm, who played the android in the first film of the franchise, was used in the production. Animatronics, motion capture technology, and computer graphics were employed. (Animatronics is a technique used in cinema, animation, and computer modeling to create special effects for movable artificial body parts of a human or animal when a complex model is needed that cannot be achieved through stop-motion photography.)
  • The monster's offspring was played by Robert Bobrotsky. In one interview, director and screenwriter Fede Álvarez explained that he did not want to show a creature created solely through computer technology, so he had to find a person who would look natural in the role. Upon hearing about Bobrotsky, a former university basketball player approximately 2.3 meters tall, Álvarez sent him an email offering the role in the 'Alien' franchise film, which he accepted with enthusiasm. The appearance of the Offspring is primarily due to makeup, with only the creature's tail added via computer graphics.
  • Director and screenwriter Fede Álvarez brought in special effects artists who had worked for James Cameron on the film 'Aliens.' Life-size alien figures, miniature replicas, and computer-generated imagery with animation were used.
