Breaking Social is a documentary that examines the collapse of the social contract. The film explores how global patterns of kleptocracy and corruption dismantle societal structures, leading to widespread public unrest. It focuses on the systemic failure to reward contribution and labor, while highlighting a shift in Chile where young women have taken leadership roles in social uprisings to find a path beyond cynicism.
Directed by Fredrik Gertten, the film is a co-production between the Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, and Sweden. It was produced by companies including SVT, VPRO, YLE, and Film i Skåne. The project features several individuals appearing as themselves, including Rutger Bregman, Sarah Chayes, Joanna Demarco, Matthew Caruana Galizia, Caroline Muscat, and Jennifer Craig. The movie was released on October 26, 2023, with a total runtime of 93 minutes.
