Freddie, a 25-year-old woman who was born in South Korea and adopted as a small child by a French family, makes an impulsive decision to travel to the country of her birth. What begins as a visit to friends turns into a search for her biological parents, and the trip takes her life in directions she had not anticipated. The film follows her over a period of years as she tries to piece together her sense of identity, including encounters with a father who does not share her language and a mother who cannot be found.
Return to Seoul is a 2022 drama directed and written by Davy Chou, marking his second feature. It was produced by Charlotte Vincent and Katia Khazak and shot across several countries, with Germany, Belgium, Cambodia, Romania, South Korea and France among the production countries. Park Ji-min plays Freddie in her first screen role, alongside Oh Kwang-rok, Guka Han, Kim Sun-young, Yoann Zimmer and Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, with a credited cast of 44. The film runs 119 minutes.
Released in late 2022, the film earned around 2 million dollars worldwide, a modest figure consistent with its art-house scale. On IMDb it holds 6.9 from roughly 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.3 from about 495 votes. A critics' rating of 8.2 from 134 reviews places it noticeably higher than those audience scores.
