Jersey Girl
Short description
Jersey Girl follows Ollie Trinke, a New York music publicist whose life changes abruptly after his wife dies in childbirth. Left to raise his daughter Gertie alone, and having lost his job after an outburst at a press conference, he moves back to his father's house in New Jersey, where he takes unglamorous work and settles into a life far from his former career. His daughter and Maya, a woman he meets locally, gradually pull him out of his slump, but an opportunity to return to Manhattan forces him to weigh his old ambitions against what he has built.
Kevin Smith directed and wrote the film, his sixth in a run of seventeen features, coming after Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and before Clerks II. Scott Mosier produced. Ben Affleck leads as Ollie, with Raquel Castro as Gertie, Liv Tyler as Maya, George Carlin as Ollie's father Bart, and supporting turns from Stephen Root and Mike Starr among a credited cast of 37.
The film was released in March 2004 and cost about 35 million dollars, and its worldwide gross came to roughly the same figure, so it did not turn a profit at the box office. Reception was middling: a film critics' rating of 5.6 out of 10 from 173 reviews, with audiences close behind at 6.2 on IMDb across some 74,000 votes and the same 6.2 on TMDB from a much smaller sample.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, Kevin Smith planned to cast Joey Lauren Adams, who starred with Affleck in his film "Chasing Amy", in the role played by Jennifer Lopez.
- Filming was originally scheduled to begin in early April 2002, but was postponed to July of the same year due to Ben Affleck's commitment to "Daredevil". Filming ultimately began on August 9th and ended on November 1st of that year.
- Following the failure of Martin Brest's "Gigli" (2003), Miramax removed all images of Jennifer Lopez from the promotional materials, fearing the public would perceive the film as another project featuring the Ben Affleck – Jennifer Lopez pairing. The film's release date was moved from late 2003 to early 2004. Miramax even attempted to downplay the importance of Lopez's character in the film, preemptively revealing the fate of her character.
