Short description
Nick Styles is a young patrol officer whose on-duty takedown of a dangerous criminal, Earl Talbott Blake, is caught on video by a bystander. The footage turns him into a public hero and launches a rapid rise through the ranks of law enforcement to the district attorney's office. Blake, meanwhile, is sent to prison, where he spends his time obsessing over the man who put him there and plotting revenge.
When Blake escapes, he sets out to destroy Styles not with a direct attack but by dismantling his reputation and his life piece by piece, forcing Styles to draw on the street skills and old acquaintances he left behind on his way up.
Ricochet was directed by Russell Mulcahy, the fourth of his fourteen films in chronological order, following Highlander II: The Quickening and preceding Blue Ice. Steven E. de Souza wrote the screenplay, and Joel Silver produced. Denzel Washington stars as Styles, with John Lithgow as Blake, Ice-T as Odessa, Kevin Pollak as Det. Larry Doyle, Lindsay Wagner as D.A. Priscilla Brimleigh and Mary Ellen Trainor as Gail Wallens. Made for about 19 million dollars, it took in roughly 22 million worldwide. Its 5.7/10 from 19 reviews on the critics' side sits below the 6.1/10 from 386 votes on IMDb and on TMDB.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the film, John Lithgow never blinked. The actor wore a contact lens, which created the impression that he had a glass eye.
- To ensure his limp looked convincing and remained consistent, John Lithgow wore a special orthopedic brace on his leg.
- According to viewers who saw the film at preview screenings, it originally contained far more scenes of violence and brutality, many of which were later cut. Director Russell Mulcahy stated that a scene in which Denzel Washington's character vomits as a result of a beating, while John Lithgow's character gives him a rag to wipe himself, was also removed because the preview audience disliked the depiction of a white man torturing a black man. Some footage from this scene survives only in the trailers, but the scene itself is no longer in the film.
