A Perfect World
Short description
A Perfect World follows two escaped convicts in Texas in 1963. One of them, Butch Haynes, takes a young boy named Phillip hostage, while his partner Terry Pugh proves a danger to the child. After Pugh is killed, Butch and Phillip continue on the run together, and a friendship forms between captor and captive as the boy comes to see in Butch the father he never had. Pursuing them is Red Garnett, a Texas Ranger who knows the territory and the fugitives well, working alongside FBI agent Sally Gerber.
Clint Eastwood directed the film, the seventeenth of the forty features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Unforgiven and The Bridges of Madison County. John Lee Hancock wrote the screenplay, and Eastwood produced with David Valdes and Mark Johnson. Kevin Costner plays Butch Haynes, Eastwood plays Chief Red Garnett, Laura Dern plays Sally Gerber, and T.J. Lowther plays Phillip. The credited cast runs to thirty-three names and the credited crew to sixty-four.
Made for a budget of thirty million dollars, the film took about 135 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.5 out of 10 from around 93,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.5 out of 10 from roughly 1,930 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 out of 10 from thirty-one reviews places it close to the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Kevin Costner is listed above Clint Eastwood in the film's billing. Thus, this is the first film since "California Gold" (1969) in which Eastwood is not in the top billing position.
- Eastwood initially planned to cast Denzel Washington in the role of Haynes.
- Initially, Clint Eastwood planned for his involvement in the project to be limited to his duties as director and producer. He was persuaded to act in the film by Kevin Costner.
- At one point during filming, Kevin Costner, in a fit of anger, demonstratively walked off the set. Director Clint Eastwood, instead of waiting for the actor to return, continued filming with his stand-in, Mark Thomason. Costner eventually calmed down and came back, but the scene had already been completed without him. Eastwood warned the actor that he would continue to work with his stand-in (and even film close-ups of him) if the need arose. Costner didn't allow himself to do that again.
- The song "Sea of Troubles," featured in the film, was also used in another Eastwood film – "Heartbreak Ridge" (1986).
- The photo on the film's poster is not a frame from the film itself. In the film, Philip is always dressed unusually – initially in underwear, then in Casper's costume.
