Hard to Kill
Short description
Hard to Kill follows Mason Storm, a Los Angeles detective who uncovers a corruption plot involving a powerful California politician. After he is found out, gunmen attack his home, killing his wife and leaving him for dead. He survives in a coma for seven years while his young son grows up believing his father is gone. When Storm regains consciousness, he sets out to recover his strength and settle the score with those responsible, helped by a nurse who tends to him during his recovery.
Steven Seagal stars as Mason Storm in the role that followed his debut, with Kelly LeBrock as Andy Stewart, William Sadler as Senator Vernon Trent, Frederick Coffin as Lt. Kevin O'Malley, Bonnie Burroughs as Felicia Storm and Andrew Bloch as Capt. Dan Hulland. Bruce Malmuth directed the film, which sits between his earlier Nighthawks and his later Pentathlon, from a screenplay by Steven McKay. It was produced by Gary Adelson, Bill Todman Jr. and Joel Simon.
The film was released in early 1990 and runs 95 minutes. Made for about 10 million US dollars, it took in roughly 47 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 5.8 out of 10 from around 34,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 out of 10 from far fewer votes; a critics' rating of 4.1 out of 10 from 15 reviews places it below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Warner Bros. demanded significant revisions to the already edited film and reduce its duration to 90 minutes, to make the film less intricate but more packed with action scenes. Other films featuring Steven Seagal underwent similar editing – entire scenes and plotlines were cut after final editing. As a result of such editing, inconsistencies appeared in the films.
- The first film where Steven Seagal wears his hair in a ponytail, which would later become his signature style.
- Steven Seagal offered the director's chair to Craig R. Baxley. Baxley declined, as he did not want to work with Seagal.
