Nimona
Short description
Nimona is set in a futuristic kingdom where knights serve as celebrated protectors of the realm. Ballister Boldheart, a knight, is accused of a crime he did not commit and becomes a fugitive. To clear his name he joins forces with Nimona, a rebellious teenager with the ability to change her shape. Their partnership is complicated by the possibility that Nimona is the very monster Ballister once swore to destroy.
The film was directed by Troy Quane and Nick Bruno and written by Robert L. Baird and Lloyd Taylor. It was the third feature Quane directed, following The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol and Spies in Disguise, and the second for Bruno after Spies in Disguise, making it the pair's second collaboration. Chloë Grace Moretz voices Nimona and Riz Ahmed voices Ballister Boldheart, with Eugene Lee Yang, Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint and Beck Bennett among the supporting cast. The production involved Annapurna Pictures and DNEG Animation and was made in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Released in June 2023, the film runs 99 minutes and blends action, adventure, comedy and drama within an animated fantasy and science fiction setting. It holds a rating of 7.5 out of 10 on IMDb and 7.9 out of 10 on TMDB, while a critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 103 reviews places critical and audience responses closely in line with each other.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, the film was being produced by Blue Sky Studios, but work stalled in 2021 when Disney shut down the studio. It is claimed that at that time the film was already 70% complete. A year later, the project came under the direction of Annapurna and Netflix. DNEG Animation completed the film's visuals, including the opening and closing credits, and the animation.
- Only Eugene Lee Yang auditioned for the voice of his character.
