War Pony

War Pony follows two Oglala Lakota boys living on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Bill, twenty-three, wants to build something for himself and keeps running into obstacles. Matho, twelve, is impatient to be treated as a man. Their stories run alongside each other as both struggle with identity, family and loss, and with the question of where they belong in a society that offers them little.

The film is a drama co-directed by Riley Keough and Gina Gammell, who also wrote the screenplay with Franklin Sioux Bob. It was released in 2023 and runs 114 minutes. Jojo Bapteise Whiting plays Bill and LaDainian Crazy Thunder plays Matho, with Robert Stover, Ashley Shelton, Iona Red Bear and Ta-Yamni Long Black Cat among the supporting cast. It was produced across Belgium, the United Kingdom and the United States by Protagonist Pictures, Felix Culpa, Caviar and Quickfire Films.

Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from around three thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from a much smaller group of voters. A film critics' rating of 7.2 from fifty-five reviews places it somewhat above those audience scores.
