Supergirl follows Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, who lives in Argo City, a surviving fragment of Krypton. When the city loses the Omegahedron, the power source that keeps it alive, Kara travels to Earth to recover it. The object has fallen into the hands of Selena, a witch who intends to use its energy for her own ends, and Kara must confront her while adjusting to life on Earth under the identity of a schoolgirl named Linda Lee.
The 1984 film was directed by Jeannot Szwarc, whose earlier work includes Jaws 2 and Somewhere in Time, and who went on to make Santa Claus: The Movie the following year. David Odell wrote the screenplay, and Timothy Burrill produced. Helen Slater plays the title role, with Faye Dunaway as Selena, Peter O'Toole as Zaltar, Hart Bochner as Ethan, and Mia Farrow and Simon Ward as Kara's parents, Alura and Zor-El. It was made for about 35 million dollars and returned roughly 14 million at the box office, a steep shortfall against its cost.
Audience responses were modest: on IMDb the film holds 4.4 out of 10 from about 26,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.4 out of 10 from 732 votes. A critics' rating of 4.2 out of 10 from 121 reviews places it slightly below the IMDb figure and above the TMDB one.
