Aftersun

Sophie looks back at a summer holiday she took with her father Calum twenty years earlier, when she was around eleven. The two of them stay at a seaside resort that has seen better days, and the trip gives them a rare stretch of time together. Calum is loving and idealistic, and the film moves between the closeness they share, the small disagreements that surface, and the quieter strain beneath those days. As an adult, Sophie sifts through her recollections, trying to square the father she knew with a man she feels she never fully understood.

Charlotte Wells wrote and directed the film, her first feature, and it was produced by Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski and Amy Jackson. Paul Mescal plays Calum and Frankie Corio plays the young Sophie, with Celia Rowlson-Hall as the adult Sophie and Brooklyn Toulson, Sally Messham and Ayşe Parlak among a credited cast of 22; 71 crew members are credited. The film runs 101 minutes and was made across the United Kingdom, the United States and Turkey.

Released in October 2022, Aftersun took about 8 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.6/10 from roughly 126,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.6/10 from about 2,000 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 8.7/10 from 245 reviews. Wells has since directed The Boys of Dungeon Lane: In Conversation with Paul McCartney and Paul Mescal, followed by New York Never Let Me Down, both in 2026.
