Short description

3 Days Max is a French comedy directed by Tarek Boudali, who also stars as Rayane, a clumsy police officer hoping to join the secret service. When his grandmother, a well-known participant in a popular reality show, is kidnapped by a Mexican cartel, Rayane and his loyal friends have only three days to save her. The chase takes them from Paris to Abu Dhabi and Cancún, with the kidnappers demanding precious stones as ransom.

The film is the third directed by Boudali, following Marry Me, Dude in 2017 and 30 Days Max in 2020, and it shares the same comic universe as that earlier film. Boudali wrote the screenplay with Pierre Dudan. The cast includes Philippe Lacheau, Julien Arruti, Vanessa Guide, Marie-Anne Chazel and Chantal Ladesou.

Released on 25 October 2023, the film runs 87 minutes and was produced by StudioCanal and Axel Films on a budget of about 20 million dollars. It grossed roughly 15 million dollars worldwide, less than its cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.3 from around 1,700 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.4 from about 222 votes, indicating a modest reception from viewers. A further film directed by Boudali, Somnambule, is listed for 2027.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was released in France in mid-October 2020, on the day the government introduced restrictions due to the second wave of COVID-19. The number of screenings in cinemas was reduced, as was the number of seats, and viewers were only allowed to watch while wearing masks, but despite all this, 1.3 million tickets were sold. Writer and director Tareq Boudali immediately suggested to the producers that they work on a sequel and received permission to do so.
  • Filming the helicopter scene was not easy, as only military helicopters were allowed to fly in that area of Abu Dhabi. The government granted permission for filming and provided a 'Black Hawk' helicopter, but during filming, Tareq Boudali kept having his shirt buttons come undone, revealing his safety harness. He reviewed the footage after filming and found that only the first 15 seconds were usable, meaning the scene would have to be reshot. Then the helicopter developed some technical problems, and another helicopter had to be found, and by the time filming began, Boudali's shirt buttons had been firmly sewn directly to the loops.
  • Only three days were allocated for filming the skyscraper climb in Abu Dhabi, so the filmmakers had no time to rehearse on location. The safety equipment was tested on a building near Paris, but the day before filming began, the filmmakers were informed that due to visits from certain officials, they would have not three days, but only one. They were later given another day for filming, however.
