One Missed Call

A group of young people in Japan begin receiving voicemail messages that appear to come from their own phones, dated days ahead. Each recording contains the sound of the recipient's own death, and when the appointed moment arrives, the prediction comes true. Yumi Nakamura, a university student, is drawn into the pattern after her friend Yoko dies exactly as the message foretold. As more of those around her receive the calls, Yumi starts to investigate a supernatural explanation, helped by a police officer whose sister died under similar circumstances. Their search points toward a woman who vanished months earlier and the daughters she left behind.

The film is directed by Takashi Miike, the tenth of the forty-two features he has made in chronological order, arriving between Graveyard of Honor and Gozu. Minako Daira wrote the screenplay, and the cast is led by Ko Shibasaki as Yumi, with Shinichi Tsutsumi as Hiroshi Yamashita, Kazue Fukiishi, Anna Nagata, Atsushi Ida and Mariko Tsutsui. Produced in Japan by TOHO, KADOKAWA and 3L Filmverleih, it runs 112 minutes.

Made for about 2 million USD, it took roughly 18 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from 21,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2/10 from 503 votes; critics rated it 5.4/10 across 26 reviews, somewhat below the audience scores.
