Short description
The Jacket follows Jack Starks, a Gulf War veteran who survives a gunshot wound to the head and returns to his home state of Vermont with recurring amnesia. Accused of a murder he cannot remember committing, he is sent to a psychiatric hospital, where Dr. Thomas Becker subjects him to an experimental treatment: drugs, a straitjacket and long hours locked in a morgue drawer. The regimen throws him forward in time, where he meets a young woman named Jackie and learns that he has only days left to live. Together they search for a way to change what seems already set.
John Maybury directed, working from a screenplay by Massy Tadjedin. The film sits between his earlier Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon and his later The Edge of Love. Adrien Brody plays Jack, with Keira Knightley as Jackie, Kris Kristofferson as Dr. Becker, Jennifer Jason Leigh as Dr. Beth Lorenson, Kelly Lynch as Jean Price and Brad Renfro as a figure known as The Stranger. George Clooney, Steven Soderbergh and Peter Guber were among the producers.
The production carried a budget of about 29 million US dollars and took roughly 22 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from around 1,800 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.4 out of 10 from 162 reviews, so audiences have generally rated it more warmly than reviewers did.

- To look more convincing in the role of a war veteran, Adrien Brody followed a protein diet during filming.
- Mark Wahlberg and Colin Farrell were considered for the role of the main character at different times.
- Filming for this movie began on January 19, 2004. Shooting took place in the Canadian cities of Montreal and Ormstown, as well as in the Scottish cities of Glasgow and in the Edinburgh suburb of Dechmont at 'Bangour Village' hospital.
- The film's screenplay is based on Jack London's novel "The Strait Jacket".
- Scenes of Adrian Brody's weeping in the drawer were filmed with maximum realism. Between takes, the actor asked to be left locked inside to better experience the hero's despair.
- Initially, the love scene between the film's characters was longer, but it was disapproved of by audiences at preview screenings and was shortened.
