The Lake House
Short description
Kate Forster leaves her lakeside house near Chicago for a new job at a city hospital in 2006, and Alex Wyler, an architect disappointed with his career, moves in two years earlier. The house matters to him because his father, the architect Simon Wyler, designed and built it, so Alex sets about restoring it. Kate left a note in the mailbox for whoever came next. Alex writes back, and the two begin corresponding through letters that pass between them in the same mailbox, gradually understanding that they are living in different years and that the mailbox is their only link. Kate and Alex grow close through their letters while each carries on with life in their own time, and their attempts to bridge the distance between them lead toward risk rather than a simple meeting.
Alejandro Agresti directed the film, which followed Valentin (2002) in his filmography. David Auburn wrote the screenplay with Kim Eun-jeong and Yeoh Gee-na, and Doug Davison and Roy Lee produced it. Keanu Reeves plays Alex and Sandra Bullock plays Kate, with Christopher Plummer as Simon, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Alex's brother Henry, Willeke van Ammelrooy as Kate's mother and Dylan Walsh as Morgan. The film cost 40 million dollars and took about 115 million dollars worldwide.
Audience response was warmer than critical response. On IMDb it holds 6.8/10 from around 165,000 votes and on TMDB 7/10 from roughly 3,000 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.3/10 across 155 reviews.

- John Cusack was initially considered for the role of the main character.
- The film went down in history as the first to be released simultaneously in three digital formats: DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-ray.
- Kate lives at 1620 Racine. The same house was home to Sean Connery's character in 'The Untouchables' (1987).
- The film's working title for a long time was 'Il Mare'. In the film, this Italian word meaning 'sea' is used for the name of the restaurant where Alex arranges a meeting with Kate two years later. It is also the title of the original Korean film.
- Bullock's character watches the same film twice – "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1946).
- In the film, Alex tells his brother: “You wouldn’t even be able to swim, there’s no staircase to the water… You’re here like in a box, in an aquarium where you can see everything around, but you can’t touch it.” However, other shots clearly show that a staircase to the water actually exists.
- Filming took place from March 14 to May 29, 2005.
- When Kate looks through photos from two years prior, she says to the dog: "Do you remember that day? You weren’t in a good mood." In reality, the dog was with Alex at that time.
- During the heroes' chance encounter in 2004, Alex and Kate dance to Paul McCartney's "This Never Happened Before," which is essentially an anachronism: the song was not recorded by McCartney until 2005.
