Short description
Cleveland Heep, the superintendent of a Philadelphia apartment complex, one night pulls a young woman from the building's swimming pool. She calls herself Story, and she is no ordinary tenant: she belongs to a water-dwelling people from a storybook world and is trying to get back home. Malevolent creatures are determined to keep her here, and Cleveland, together with the residents, sets out to protect her and help her complete her journey.
M. Night Shyamalan wrote and directed the film, his fifth feature in a directorial run of fifteen, arriving between The Village and The Happening. Paul Giamatti plays Cleveland, with Bryce Dallas Howard as Story and supporting turns from Jeffrey Wright, Bob Balaban, Sarita Choudhury and Cindy Cheung. Shyamalan also produced alongside Sam Mercer for Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures and Blinding Edge Pictures.
The film was released in July 2006 and runs 110 minutes. Made for about 70 million dollars, it returned roughly 73 million worldwide, a modest result against its cost. On IMDb it holds 5.5 out of 10 from around 108,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.6 out of 10 from about 1,500 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 4.5 out of 10 from 212 reviews, placing the reviews below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was originally intended to be made at Disney Studios, but M. Night Shyamalan was unable to reach an agreement with the studio executives regarding his next project. After Shyamalan left Disney, where his four previous films had been made, Warner Brothers agreed to finance the film.
- It took eight weeks to build the set for the apartment complex shown in the film.
- The film's plot is based on a fairy tale that Shyamalan wrote for his children.
- Kevin Costner was considered for the role of Hip.
- Shyamalan was very impressed with Cindy Chung's audition for the role of Yang-Sun Cho, but he was shocked to learn that her agent requested a fee of $1 million. Night was going to pay Cindy $65,000. In the end, they settled on $100,000.
- At the request of M. Night Shyamalan, the sets for the film had to be built within a 45-minute drive of his home.
- Philip Seymour Hoffman was considered for one of the roles in the film. He liked the script, but he was unable to participate in the film due to commitments to other projects.
- William Hurt, Sidney Poitier, Chris Cooper, Gene Wilder, Terrence Howard, Alec Baldwin, Vince Vaughn, Forest Whitaker, and Don Cheadle were considered for supporting roles in the film.
