The Secret in Their Eyes

Retired Buenos Aires court official Benjamín Espósito sets out to write a novel about a case that has haunted him for a quarter of a century: the 1974 rape and murder of a young married woman in the Argentine capital. Working alongside a former colleague, judge Irene Menéndez Hastings, he revisits the investigation he once led, the suspect who was caught, and the era of gathering political repression that shaped what happened next. The reopened case also brings back long-suppressed feelings between the two of them.

The film is a drama, mystery and thriller directed by Juan José Campanella, who wrote the screenplay with Eduardo Sacheri. It stars Ricardo Darín as Benjamín, Soledad Villamil as Irene, Guillermo Francella as his colleague Pablo Sandoval, Pablo Rago as the widower Ricardo Morales, Javier Godino as Isidoro Gómez and Carla Quevedo as Liliana Coloto. Around 32 cast members and 125 crew are credited. It was produced by Mariela Besuievsky, Campanella and Carolina Urbieta for Argentine and Spanish companies.

Made for about two million dollars and released in August 2009, the film took roughly 34 million worldwide, a large return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 8.2 from around 241,000 votes, against a critics' rating of 7.9 from 137 reviews and 8 on TMDB. It is the earliest of the three features Campanella has directed, followed by Underdogs and Strangers in the Park.
