Ceddo

Ceddo is set in a West African kingdom where the arrival of Islam, Christianity and the slave trade is putting traditional ways of life under pressure. When King Demba War sides with the Muslims, a group of Ceddo — the people who hold to the old customs — abduct his daughter, Princess Dior Yacine, as a protest against forced conversion. Their stand against the king and the new faith becomes the centre of the conflict.

Ousmane Sembène directed and wrote the film, which was released in 1978, partway through a career that also includes Black Girl, Mandabi, Faat Kiné and Moolaadé. Tabata Ndiaye plays the princess, Mamadou Dioumé appears as Prince Biram Ngone Thioub, and Matoura Dia plays the king, alongside Moustapha Yade, Ismaila Diagne and Omar Gueye. The film runs 117 minutes and was produced in Senegal and France by Filmi Domirev and the Ministère de la Coopération.

The film's ratings put it in modest but solid territory. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from about 1,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 out of 10 from a small group of 36 voters. The larger IMDb sample suggests a steady, if not enthusiastic, response from general viewers.
