Short description
A pathologist investigates the mysterious death of a friend, leading him to discover a connection between a series of fatalities and a cursed videotape. As he examines the victims, he finds evidence of a deadly virus and a vengeful spirit named Sadako. The investigation reveals that the tape causes death shortly after it is viewed, and the protagonist soon finds himself targeted by the same curse that claimed the lives of his friend and the friend's family.
Directed by George Iida, this Japanese horror mystery was the first of two films he directed before Jam Films in 2002. The movie features Koichi Sato, Miki Nakatani, and Hinako Saeki. Produced by Basara Pictures with a budget of 3 million USD, it earned 13 million USD at the worldwide box office.
Audience reception was mixed, with a rating of 5.2/10 on IMDb from 4,600 votes and 5.4/10 on TMDB from 171 votes. Film critics gave it a lower rating of 4/10 based on 86 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Joji Iida’s film “Spiral” and Hideo Nakata’s “The Ring” were released simultaneously in Japanese theaters. The film company’s management hoped this would increase box office revenue. Some actors appeared in both films, and the same people worked on both projects (although they had different directors and screenwriters), but “The Ring” became an incredibly successful project, while “Spiral” did not.
