Short description
Cyber City Oedo 808 is set in the year 2808, in a city built on TMDB of old Tokyo. Three convicted criminals serving extremely long sentences in an orbital prison are offered a way out: they can join a special unit of the Cyber Police and earn reductions to their terms for every fugitive they capture and every mission they complete. Their handler, Juzo Hasegawa, keeps them under control with collars fitted around their necks that detonate if they tamper with them or run past their deadlines. The recruits are Shunsuke Sengoku, Merrill "Benten" Yanagawa and Rikiya "Goggles" Gabimaru, each with his own skills and his own reasons to want out.
The film is an animated crime and science fiction work directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, his sixth feature, following Lensman, Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, Neo Tokyo and Goku: Midnight Eye and preceding Ninja Scroll. Akinori Endo wrote the screenplay, and the production was handled by Madhouse with Yasuteru Iwase and Makoto Seya producing. The voice cast includes Hiroya Ishimaru as Sengoku, Kaneto Shiozawa as Benten and Tessyo Genda as Gabimaru, with Norio Wakamoto as Hasegawa.
Released in June 1990 and running 128 minutes, the film carries a rating of 6.9 out of 10 on TMDB from a modest number of votes, placing it as a moderately regarded title rather than a widely seen one.
What's left behind the scenes
- The name of the setting—Oedo—is a portmanteau of "Oasis" and "Edo," the old name for Tokyo.
- The characters' weapons are jutte—daggers used by certain units of the Japanese police during the Edo period. They also serve as badges identifying their membership in the cyber-police. Although each character possesses such a dagger, only Sengoku uses the jutte for its intended purpose.
- The first episode served as a pilot, meaning subsequent episodes were intended to be released only if the first was successful. In the finale of the pilot episode, Sengoku, infuriated by his sentence being increased by 20 years, sneaks along a building ledge to kill Hasegawa, saying, "You may think I'm old-fashioned, but I still believe in the death penalty." Later, since Sengoku and Hasegawa appear in the second and third episodes, the ending was redrawn; now, Sengoku attacks two men of Asian appearance, saying, "To become free, I will kill as many criminals as necessary."
