Short description

An alien named Fiore returns to Earth to reunite with Mamoru, a childhood friend he met years prior. While Fiore intends to fulfill a promise to bring Mamoru flowers, he has been corrupted by a parasitic entity known as the Kisenian Flower. This malevolent plant feeds on energy and manipulates Fiore's emotions to fuel its own power. As malevolent vines and plant creatures begin to overrun the planet, Sailor Moon and her companions must fight to protect humanity and rescue Mamoru from the alien's influence.

Directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, this 1993 Japanese production is the first of two films listed in the director's chronology, followed by Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie in 1999. The animation was produced by Toei Animation and TV Asahi, with a screenplay by Sukehiro Tomita. The voice cast features Kotono Mitsuishi as Usagi Tsukino, Toru Furuya as Mamoru Chiba, and Michie Tomizawa, Aya Hisakawa, Emi Shinohara, and Rica Fukami as the other Sailor Senshi.

The film earned 12 million USD at the worldwide box office. It is generally well-received by viewers, holding a rating of 7.7/10 on IMDb from 3,100 votes and 7.8/10 on TMDB from 191 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • In Russia, the series was broadcast under the title "Sailor Moon — Moon in a Sailor Suit."
  • The word "sailor" in the girls' names describes their battle costumes—variations of the sailor-fuku—the "sailor suit," which is a female school uniform.
  • The idea of having several fighting main heroines (unconventional for mahō shōjo) was proposed during discussions about adapting a previous manga on this plot, whose main character was Sailor Venus. From this suggestion, Naoko Takeuchi derived the concept for a new work, the adaptation of which was released in parallel with the work on the manga itself. Consequently, this series became the first in anime history to combine sentai and mahō shōjo.
  • Artemis is the Latin spelling of the name of the Greek goddess Artemis. This is not a mistake by Naoko Takeuchi, but a joke played out in the manga.
  • Almost all the names are significant. For example, "Tsuki no Usagi" means "Moon Rabbit," and "Moon" is English for "Луна." Essentially, the heroic names of the main characters are references to major celestial bodies in the Solar System, while the villains' names are various minerals.
