Descendants: The Rise of Red
Short description
The kingdom of Auradon is thrown into crisis when the Queen of Hearts launches a coup. Her rebellious daughter Red and Cinderella's rule-conscious daughter Chloe, who are not natural allies, set out to change the past together. Using the White Rabbit's pocket watch, they travel back in time hoping to prevent the event that pushed Red's mother toward villainy, and to keep Auradon from suffering the consequences.
The film is a fantasy musical adventure released in July 2024, running 92 minutes, and part of the Descendants series. It was directed by Jennifer Phang from a screenplay by Dan Frey and Russell Sommer, with Wendy Williams producing for Disney Branded Television and several partner companies. Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker lead as Red and Chloe, alongside Ruby Rose Turner, Morgan Dudley, Dara Reneé and Joshua Colley. The production credits 84 cast members and 61 crew.
Reception has been mixed and divided. On IMDb the film holds 4.7 out of 10 from around 8,200 votes, while on TMDB it averages 6.7 out of 10 from 529 votes. A much smaller group of critics, seven reviews, gives it 5.2 out of 10. The gap between the audience scores and the critics' rating suggests viewers judged it more generously than reviewers did.
What's left behind the scenes
- China Anne McClain and Melanie Paxson (playing Uma and the fairy, respectively) are the only actresses who appeared in previous installments of the franchise and reprise their roles here. McClain appeared in two sequels to Kenny Ortega's television film, Descendants (2015), which launched the franchise, and Paxson in three.
- The film traditionally ends with the phrase: “You understand, don’t you, that this is not the end… Right?”
- The fate of Carlos (played by Cameron Boyce) is not directly revealed to the audience, but he appears to have passed away. One of the characters says, “He would have wanted it this way” and cries while looking at a portrait of Carlos on the wall.
