A group of Westerners fleeing upheaval in China board a plane bound for safety, but the aircraft is hijacked and goes down in the Himalayas. Rescued by Tibetan guides, the survivors are taken to Shangri-La, a hidden valley sheltered from the outside world, where illness and conflict appear to have no place and life follows a gentler rhythm. Among the travellers are the diplomat Richard Conway and his brother George, and while some of the group are drawn to the valley's promise of peace, others want only to leave. Richard finds himself increasingly at odds with the strangers who brought them there, and with the question of what the valley expects from him in return.
Charles Jarrott directed this 1973 American production, his third feature after Anne of the Thousand Days and Mary, Queen of Scots. Larry Kramer wrote the screenplay, Ross Hunter produced, and the large credited cast is led by Peter Finch, Liv Ullmann, Sally Kellerman, George Kennedy, Michael York and Olivia Hussey. It was made for about six million dollars and returned roughly four million worldwide.
The film is rated 5.3 out of 10 on IMDb from about 3,100 votes, and 5.4 out of 10 on TMDB from a much smaller number of 41 votes.
